New, autoclave sterilized needles and equipment are used. All jewelry is autoclave sterilized surgical grade stainless steel, titanium, niobium, or 14k gold. Although these materials have proven to be very successful in new piercings, those with extreme sensitivities to certain metals could still react.
A Normal Piercing may be sore, itchy or may even bruise at first. Slight redness may last for up to several months in some cases. There could be some bleeding for up to a few days later. It might secrete a clear or slightly milky fluid which dries on the jewelry or around the openings: Don't worry, this isn't pus. Regardless of how well the piercing is taken care of, complications or side effects such as keloid scarring, follicular cysts, and allergic reactions to metal or cleaning solutions can still occur.
Keep up with your cleaning routine to reduce the risk of infection. Most infections can be traced to: A) Touching the piercing with unwashed hands. B) Contact with cosmetics, dirty clothing, bedding, etc. C) Swimming pool, hot tub, lake, ocean water. D) Slacking off on your cleaning routine!
Signs of infection are redness and swelling; heated sensation in pierced area; pain, esp. throbbing or spreading pain; unusual (as opposed to normal) discharge. Antibiotic treatment should be the decision of a physician. Some will react allergically to antibiotic preparations. Over the counter Antibiotic creams or ointments can get trapped inside a piercing, and cause more harm than good; Use only as a last resort, sparingly, and clean out within a few hours.

Wearing genital jewelry does require caution during certain activities, particularly if the piercing has not yet completely healed. When both or one partner is pierced, extra care must be taken to prevent injury or broken condoms. In some cases, the piercings and the desired activity are simply not compatible.
New piercings do not prohibit sexual activity, however, exposure to the partner's bodily fluids must be prevented to reduce the risk of infection, even in a monogamous relationship. Use common sense, if you have any. Numerous microorganisms, including bacteria, viruses and yeasts are present in genital and oral cavities. Both partners should wash their hands before touching the jewelry or the piercing. Latex barriers should be used. Cleaning the piercing after activity is a good idea.
In any case, activity can prolong healing or cause discomfort for duration of healing period. There is no evidence of genital piercings causing urinary tract infections in either partner. Heavy pulling, pinching or tugging on jewelry could tear or reopen the piercing. The thicker the jewelry, the more surface area over which pressure is distributed. The depth and width of the piercing will also determine the amount of play it can comfortably withstand. Discomfort caused by friction against the jewelry or friction within the piercing can be alleviated by applying a water based lubricant to the jewelry.
Penis piercings with average sized jewelry rarely interfere with the use of condoms. Condoms with larger receptacle ends will fit comfortably over Prince Albert jewelry. Contraceptive diaphragms may be dislodged by curved barbells or circular barbells worn in a Prince Albert.
The piercer may need to trim pubic hair; although shaving is not necessary. Trimming the hair allows the piercer to clean the area thoroughly, mark the piercing, and apply forceps without pulling hair. If a woman desires multiple piercings, not only must the placement be decided based on her anatomy but on the placement of existing piercings. Outer labia piercings can pinch a hood or inner labia piercings. A pair of outer labia rings can pinch the inner labia if the inner labia protrude between the outer. Depending on individual anatomy, the amount of pressure and friction occurring naturally between the thighs can irritate many female genital piercings.
Piercings which are in danger of tearing when the vaginal opening widens should be removed. Horizontal hood piercings may stretch uncomfortably or tear with the jewelry in place. Discuss the matter with the doctor or midwife prior to delivery. The jewelry can be easily replaced after birthing is complete. Properly placed labia piercings should be able to stay in throughout the pregnancy, labor, and delivery, but it's best to get professional advice.
Most men have found that penis piercings with jewelry smaller than 14 or 12 gauge tend to be uncomfortable or pinch, but once the piercing has been stretched to a thicker gauge, the pinching sensation stops. Bruising is not uncommon with new Prince Albert, Ampallang and Apadravya piercings.
